From a missionary in North Africa, reflecting on the Covid-19 crisis.

Some of the core spiritual strongholds of your mission field really come out during a crisis. In North Africa there is a lot of fear. I’ve seen this a lot in people here during this time. It affects the missionaries, too.

I’ve felt fearful and anxious as things started to shut down and more restrictions were imposed on me. I feel a loss of control, uncertainty, and worry. But this is normal. We’re going to feel this way and there’s no shame in that. But it’s also important to recognize these feelings and start to administer the antidote.

What’s the antidote of fear? Love. Trust. Hope.

I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I hope. Psalm 130:5

Focusing on God’s incredible love and His character as a refuge and anchor and provider has helped me to combat those feelings of fear. I’m praying for people around me to know Him like I do. For them to have the same hope and trust and peace that comes with knowing Christ.

This God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him. Psalm 18:30

Focus on the fact that today, this week, this month is not the end of the story. There is hope. Things will get better. Try to have a longer range mindset in the midst of taking things a day at a time.

And pray. Pray for the people you’re ministering to, pray for missionaries, for healthcare workers, governments, pray for your own mental health.

But whatever you do, pray first.
